Beyond the Classroom: Enrichment Programs

At Wheatley Montessori, we offer a variety of enrichment opportunities that complement our core curriculum:

MUSIC – Students explore classical, folk, jazz, and world music.
DANCE – Taught by Carolina Dance Collaborative, students experience ballet, jazz, modern, hip-hop, and African dance.
YOGA – Led by Colin & Kessie Blassengale, students practice yoga daily to improve focus, balance, and strength.
SPANISH – Through songs, games, and parent involvement, children develop early Spanish language skills.
ART & FIELD TRIPS – Museums, theaters, parks, and outdoor adventures enrich learning.

At Wheatley Montessori, we believe that education should be joyful, engaging, and full of discovery.

Practical Life

From polishing silver to arranging flowers, practical life activities build independence, confidence, and responsibility. These hands-on experiences help children develop focus, order, and coordination, laying the foundation for lifelong success.

Sensorial

Children refine their senses through activities that involve sorting, categorizing, and comparing objects based on size, shape, color, texture, sound, and weight. These early sensory experiences provide a strong foundation for mathematics and critical thinking.

Mathematics

Using concrete materials, students develop a deep understanding of math concepts like length, volume, sequencing, and the decimal system. Montessori students often work ahead of their grade level, confidently grasping abstract mathematical ideas.

Language & Literacy

At Wheatley Montessori, phonemic awareness is taught through hands-on, multi-sensory activities. Instead of memorizing letters, students trace sandpaper letters, use movable alphabets, and develop writing skills before reading. Public speaking and storytelling are also key components of our language program.

Science

Young scientists at Wheatley Montessori observe, experiment, and explore! From botany and zoology to physics and chemistry, students engage in hands-on experiments that bring science to life.

History, Geography
and Culture

We celebrate diversity, inclusion, and global awareness. Students learn about:
World geography – continents, countries, and cultures
History – with a focus on underrepresented voices
Cultural celebrations – Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, Asian Pacific Heritage Month, and Women’s History Month

Through these studies, children gain a deep appreciation for the world and its people.
